DJ SPENCE:CHICAGO Live from the CHI 11/25/11

Here is my latest live set, recorded in Chicago on 11/25/11.  I think it is a pretty good representation of how I like to bring intensity & passion into the live mix while blending what I consider to be the best of my favorite genres of house music.  Sit back, turn it up, and feel welcome to leave me any feedback either here, at the link, or via private message.   For the Love of House, SPENCE

… oh yeah:  That lighted DJ shirt was a gift from a friend. It’s sound activated, runs off of a battery pack that clips onto your pants or in your pocket. Kinda’ fun to wear once in a while……

UGHTV BLOG: ‘FEATURED’ ~ SOULMAN T

“I first heard the incredible sounds of up-and-coming UK Producer Sweeney ‘Soulman T’ almost 2 years ago, when fellow Chicago-area DJ Kelvin ‘DJ KELVINTHE1′ Anderson opened up one

SOULMAN T

of his podcast mixes with “The Way It’s Gotta Be”.   It was as if somebody grabbed me by my heart & soul and demanded my full attention.  What I was hearing was a powerful slice of old-skool-meets-modern-vibe underground house… 8 heavenly minutes of a classic-sounding melodic build infused with a minimalistic sensibility and carried along by a relentless driving kick that doesn’t make it full presence known until a good 3:04 into the damn track!  I instantly contacted Kelvin and asked (more like demanded) him to ID the track for me, fully expecting to be given the run-around for requesting what must have been one of his most treasured silver bullets.  Kel’s not only graciously ID’d the track for me, but also offered to put me in touch with the man who created this incredible music!  Hell yeah!  Soulman turned out to be a super cool, humble, accessible (but known to disappear off the radar from time-to-time) and TRUE underground house cat to his core.  I began to play many of his tracks in my mixes, and more than a few times I had excited house DJ’s from all over the world contacting me (“That song is “I See How It Is (Sanna Virus Mix)”!!!…  Do you know Soulman T???…  Can you get that track for me???”).  I’ve been a super-fan ever since that day I heard “The Way It’s Gotta Be”….. now it’s time to share the knowledge…….”

WORDS OF WISDOM

Check out these words of wisdom dropped by MasterDj TonySoul (靈魂大師):

“Every set is a demo. Every mix is your production. Every time you play its a rehearsal. When you play live, its an audition. You never know who is listening. No time to bullshit. Must stay sharp whether there is ONE viewer, or 700. YOU NEVER KNOW…. That one viewer may own 9 clubs in the South of France. But you was bullshitting since you didn’t see many viewers on the screen. YOU LOSE. Just saying..”

VIDEO: DEADMAU5 LIVE IN CHICAGO

Check out this video recording of DEADMAU5 rocking the Windy City with 2 sold out concerts at Chicago’s Aaragon Ballroom this past weekend.  DEADMAU5 was off-the-damn-hook and the as you can see by the video that the crowd was completely losing their sh*t … EPIC!!!!

“DJs! If You Want It, You Better Take It!”

Antoine Simpson, Chicago-based house music lover AND outspoken blogger is a house-head I think is worth following because everything I’ve seen written by this cat clearly comes from the heart.  He just posted a new article over at Househeadspeaks.com that is not only worth the quick read, but may ruffle a few feathers.  “DJs! If You Want It, You Better Take It!” contains Antoine’s strong perspective along with words-of-warning and wisdom for every DJ trying to break into their local scene.  Click the link and read about what you may be up against and how to fight against it…. and while you are at it, subscribe to his blog, join his Facebook page and follow him on Twitter because this house-head is already doing so and suggests you do the same!!!  :)

JEFF MILLS ‘Exhibitionist’

Check out American Techno DJ/Producer Jeff Mills mix on 3 turntables during this 10 minute excerpt from his 2004 DVD “Exhibitionist”.  During his live performances the Detroit-born Mills usually mixes on 3 decks and is known to spin up to 70 records in one hour.  We found this quote in the comments section for this video to be quite fitting considering the mastery contained within:

“All you kids who can click options on VirtualDJ and think you have skills……. You don’t know the meaning of “achievement” – the sheer insane joy of putting the old track in it’s sleeve in the record crate, fishing out the slab you want next, changing your mind, getting another one out instead, throwing in onto the deck, frantically trying to get the pitch right, using your fingers to fine tune the beat match before and during the mix…..and hearing it all come together. You know nothing”.  Posted by Zog26

ROGER SANCHEZ rocking four CDJ’s LIKE A BOSS….

Oh man this is pure SICKNESS.  Watch Stealth Records head honcho and award-winning American DJ/Producer ROGER SANCHEZ rock four Pioneer CDJ-2000′s and a DJM-2000 on Pioneer’s ‘DJsounds’ series.  Also hear how the ‘S-Man’ uses the CDJ Hot Cue Banks, how he organizes his tracks and more….

‘DIGITAL DJ vs VINYL DJ vs SYNC vs BEAT MATCH’  by MasterDJ TONY SOUL

I WANTED TO TOUCH ON WHAT APPEARS TO BE A VERY HOT TOPIC IN THE DJ GAME.
Since I am DJ who switched from Vinyl to Digital years ago, I wanted to share my perspective.
Dont take it personal…

R.I.P STEVE JOBS ~ APPLE FOUNDER/VISIONARY

Apple founder and visionary entrepreneur Steve Jobs passed away October 5th 2011 at the age 56, seven years after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It’s no exaggeration to say that Steve Job’s products greatly contributed to the growth of modern music, especially house music, as Apple Mac’s are a favored computer platform for many producers and DJ’s.   HousePlanet.DJ posted an excellent little article listing many famous DJ’s reactions to the passing of Steve Jobs.  Read it at this link.

MIDWEST ELECTRIC: THE STORY OF CHICAGO HOUSE AND DETROIT TECHNO

“Midwest Electric: The Story of Chicago House and Detroit Techno” is a pretty amazing 59 minute audio recording by Afropop Worldwide consisting of dozens of interviews with house & techno producers such as Paul Johnson and Carl Craig, among others, as well as scholars, radio DJs and party promoters to find out how Chicago and Detroit greatly contributed to the origins of house music.

MADHOUSE RECORDS ~ KERRI CHANDLER INTERVIEW

If you know me it should be no surprise to you that I am a huge HUGE Kerri Chandler fan. James from Madhouse Records conducted a KILLER interview with Kerri that is a fascinating 8 minutes of history, insight & knowledge dropped by a living legend who is not only a deep house ORIGINATOR, but a house music INNOVATOR.  Check out the tragic story behind why Kerri changed from producing/performing in the Hip-Hop genre to House music, why his preferred players are TAPE MACHINES (!)  and much much more….

‘Uh’ produced by ANDRE HARRIS

ANDRE HARRIS

Prolific Chicago DJ/Producer/Label Head Andre Harris (“10 Things Not To Say To A DJ”) has just dropped another smoking hot joint that we here at UGHTV think you need to hear: “Uh” is a funky house stomper designed to blow-up the floor.  Have a listen by clicking on the link to Traxsource.comCAN I GET A WITNESS!!!

THE CRANE STAND

Most DJ laptop stands are ugly-looking contraptions designed only to fufill the base functional requirements involved in balancing a computer over a mixer.  Some of them look like ‘HI I’M DAN CAN I HELP YOU?” haunting aisle 7 of your local Home Depot decided to gather up some parts from the overstock cabinet and screw it together during his lunch break.  For those of you that have been waiting for an über-stylish alternative that not only looks KILLER but is the MOST STABLE and WELL-DESIGNED stand one could possibly imagine… meet The CRANE STAND.  This thing KICKS TOTAL ASS…

‘SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND’….

This track is catchy as hell, and the video…. ahhhh, the video….. let’s just say I’M DIGGING IT! “Something For The Weekend” is the second single off of Ben Westbeech’s forthcoming album “There’s More To Life Than This.”  Produced by Enzyme Black (Danny J Lewis ~ London Underground House Producer/DJ extraordinaire), “Something For The Weekend” is a house-inspired, disco-tinged feelgood groove that’s a perfect prelude to any weekend.

SUPER GREG! NUMBER ONE!

This tantalizingly short 1999 teaser showcasing the skills of international DJ superstar SUPER GREG single-handedly turned the DJ world on it’s head.  Very shortly after SUPER GREG exploded onto the global DJ scene, he quickly disappeared,  and rumors that this Master Selector had decided to go deep deep underground began being whispered ear-to-ear in house clubs & parties.  Soon this news began circulating on house music chat sites such as ‘Deep House Pages” where an underwear-only clad DJ elite sit silently in front of their glowing computer screens while typing out judgement on those not registered to use their hallowed forums.  SUPER GREG left us all with a brief impression of his insane greatness burned into the collective consciousness of DJs around the planet, most of whom must now trudge onward in the massive shadow of the unibrowed one that came before….. like a BOSS.

“THIS IS ACID” (CHICAGO 1988)

“This Is Acid” by Maurice & The Posse Featuring Hot Hands Hula (released on Trax Records) and performed during the video below on the ‘Manic Monday Dance USA Party’.  Oh yeah, that’s Maurice…as in Maurice Joshua. You might have heard of him, but if not… go here.  The version of “This Is Acid” embedded below is the more popular Todd Terry production… compare that to the little-known original underground “acid” version, which can be heard here.

“WHAT IS HOUSE MUSIC?”

I’ve given up on verbally describing HOUSE to people that ask me “What is House Music?“.  I used to tell people that House is a constantly evolving style of dance music with many branches that has it’s roots in the production elements of 70′s disco/80′s electronica, furthered along by advances in recording & production technologies, created/incubated/melded in Chicago/New York/Jersey/Detroit,  then migrated around the planet and back again while absorbing multiple influences as it sonically unites people of all beliefs/nationalities/sexualities through the spiritual power that it can produce within our bodies/hearts/souls/minds blah blah blah BLAH BLAH!…. now I just say “LISTEN TO THE MUSIC AND YOU’LL FEEL IT“… and then if I have to I direct them to Wikipedia for a solidly linear left-brain answer to “What is HOUSE MUSIC?

AIAIAI TMA-1 HEADPHONES

One of the most buzzed about pieces of gear to recently come on the scene in some time, AIAIAI’s TMA-1 Headphones have some in the DJ community claiming they are the most perfect headphones.  TMA-1′s are the embodiment of functionality & minimalism, notable not only for those design elements included, but also for those  left out.   The name TMA-1 (Tycho Magnetic Anomaly-1) refers to the black Monolith in the science fiction novel “2001: A Space Odyssey”.  I’ve been using the TMA-1′s along with my trusted Pioneer HDJ 1000′s and I’m very happy with the TMA-1′s build quality (indestructible, as compared to my Pioneer’s which break every 9 months) and sound quality (clear & louder than other headphones).  My only complaint is that the cups stick out a little too much on my head… I wish they were a little more ‘low-profile’ like the Pioneer HDJ 1000′s.   Only time will tell if AIAIAI’s entry into the professional DJ headphone market will stand the test of time and gain the level of ‘industry standard’.  http://www.aiaiai.dk/all-products/tma-1.html

UGHTV BLOG: ‘FEATURED’ ~ DJ SPENCE:CHICAGO 9/13/11 Live Set’

DJ SPENCE:CHICAGO featured on UGHTV Blog

From the article @ www.undergroundhousetv.com

“If you like your live house music sets to be a blend of the old and the new, delivered with high-intensity & passion, while combining the very best of multiple genres during a tequila-fueled full-frontal assault in beast-mode, then you just might like DJ SPENCE:CHICAGO.   He was one of the first online DJ’s streaming live that began to push the advantages of the visual medium of video by experimenting with multiple camera angles, lighting effects, interesting backgrounds, visual software effects, and a front-on camera view.  When Spence started casting his show in 2009, the overwhelming majority of online DJ’s were either streaming audio-only, or using the same static camera angle for video:  from-the-side OR hands-on-mixer-only.  These shows were generally poorly-framed and usually included a hamper full of dirty clothes on the floor and visible in the shot, in a room with all the lights on.  Since he began posting his video sets online, Spence has adamantly committed himself to a personal ethos of publishing full set-lists in order to encourage others to support the producers of the music he plays. Here is something we think is definitely worth checking out:  DJ SPENCE:CHICAGO Live 9/13/11
